THREE IMPORTANT POINTS TO DRIVE HOME ARE:
1. Affordable housing based on what is actually affordable to folks who live and work in Oakland neighborhoods now, not affordable housing that is priced at market value, targeting those who will move in.
1a. With this, there must be legislation that requires ALL DEVELOPMENT PLANS to include these spaces.
2. Affordable Spaces FOR ARTS & CULTURE – commercial & residential, indoors & outdoors
2a. With this, there must be legislation that requires ALL DEVELOPMENT PLANS to include these spaces.
2b. Noise ordinances prevention needs to be accounted for in legislation that allows for the expression of all people of Oakland without specifications or limits put on volume
3. AN OAKLAND ARTS COMMISSION so that Oakland Artistic, Cultural, & Spiritual communities have representatives in all future development plans in Oakland.
A Snapshot of Tonight at the “Hands on Community Workshop:”
Out of 20 tables, there were 3 people of color who presented. The people seemingly leading the event were all white, with perhaps the exception of one woman, who appeared to be Indian. I say “leading” as they were in the big room of the rotunda before we (Oakland Creative Neighborhoods Coalition) descended the steps. “They” were in suits and dress slacks and shirts. “They” had blue folders from the City and were often the note-takers in the group. “They” claimed to be Oakland residents —more on that later. For now, prepare to be angry and prepare to be heard.
We cannot let Oakland be in the hands of a Florida based development firm who does not care whose history they erase, how many people they displace or what happens to the arts and culture of this place. It is not their city. It is ours.

Breeze Will will be performing at LIMINAL tonight! Advocate. Mother. Public Speaker. Leader. Writer. Poet. Berkeley and Bay Area native Breeze Will began writing poetry and short stories at the age of 11 after being inspired by poets like Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, and her older sister. Most of her inspirations for writing included the plights, pressures, and pleasures of being Black and Female while living in America. Her writing passions reflected her life passions, and she has created multiple groups that celebrated cultural identity, self-awareness, and social change, the most recent being a group called Sankofa Sessions.Today Breeze continues to share her poetry where ever there is a stage and a listening ear, speaking up for those who have not yet defined their voice. http://ow.ly/TwKxR
